Mindshift Event- September 19th

“Solving Georgia’s Educational Challenge, Leveraging Best Practices in Pursuit of Excellence.”

On Friday, September 19th the Georgia Center for Performance Excellence sponsored its first Mindshift event to bring education best practices to Georgia’s Principals and Superintendents. Before the event, educators were invited to participate in the GCPE Challenge, an online assessment of their school, which was based on the GCPE Framework for Performance Excellence. Each respondent not only received their school’s results compared to all respondents but they also received complimentary registration to this groundbreaking event.

The Georgia Center for Performance Excellence welcomed two best practice educators from Florida to share their stories of accomplishment and student success.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Winston A. Whyte was the recipient of the Florida 2007 Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership and is the principal of Howard D. McMillan Middle School, a Florida Governor’s Award recipient school.  His school demonstrated how adoption of the Framework for Excellence improves student achievement, empowers staff, improves morale, and creates equity in education.

Howard D. McMillan realized significant improvement in student performance in Math, Reading and Science as a result of their focus on school excellence. Mr. William Hall the Director of Educational Leadership and Professional Development from Brevard County Public Schools, was also a recipient of the Florida Governor’s Award for Excellence.  He presented his journey to excellence at a district level. Mr. Hall pointed to a dynamic performance scorecard linking each school to district goals as the most valuable tool that they implemented as part of the overall framework for excellence. Brevard County Schools’ results are equally as impressive as the number of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) has increased by 160% since 2003 and the number of Brevard County schools receiving the state grade of “A” on the FCAT increased by 200%.

Following the keynote presentation was a lively panel discussion involving the full audience.  The discussion ended with a collective agreement; there is incredible need and critical opportunity to use the framework for excellence to help improve Georgia public school performance. In attendance were educators from Dade County and Monroe County Georgia and concerned parents from DeKalb, Cobb, Fulton and Clayton counties.

Also, we all know measurement is critical but how do you determine which are the right measures? Bring your current scorecard(s) with you for an expert review and advice session with a GCPE coach, to help your organization reach the next level on your journey to excellence.
